This project involved a major structural restoration of a large second-story wood deck in the Cedar Park area. What initially appeared to be an aging deck surface turned out to be a much deeper structural problem once demolition began. The original deck had extensive rot, weakened framing, improper beam connections, and multiple unsafe installation details that compromised the overall stability of the structure.
After removing the old deck boards, we uncovered severe deterioration in key load-bearing areas. Several joists and beams showed rot and water damage, old fasteners were failing, and some framing members had been secured with large spikes instead of proper structural hardware. We also found improper beam splices over the masonry columns, limited bearing support, and visible sagging in multiple sections of the deck.
Because of the extent of the damage, this was not simply a resurfacing project. The deck required full structural correction and rebuild work to restore safety and long-term reliability. Our work included removing compromised framing, rebuilding damaged structural sections, correcting beam connections, reinforcing support points, and installing proper hardware throughout the deck structure.
We also addressed water-damaged areas around the ledger and support locations, corrected framing alignment issues, and rebuilt sections that had excessive movement and deflection. Every structural repair was focused on bringing the deck back to a safe, solid condition with proper load transfer and stronger connections than the original construction.
By the end of the project, the deck had been fully stabilized and rebuilt into a structurally sound outdoor space. What began as a deteriorated second-story deck with major hidden issues was restored into a safe, durable structure built for long-term use.
Before
After Removed old deck boards to expose the full extent of structural damage — rot, failed fasteners, and improper connections.
Removed rotted joists and beams, water-damaged sections, and all failing structural members.
Corrected improper beam splices over masonry columns, rebuilt beam connections with proper structural hardware.
Rebuilt damaged sections from scratch — new framing, corrected alignment, eliminated all sagging and deflection.
Replaced all large spikes and improper fasteners with code-compliant structural connectors throughout.
Addressed water damage around the ledger board, reinforced support points, ensured proper load transfer at every connection.
Second-story decks hide structural problems
Many second-story decks in the Austin area look fine from the surface but have serious structural issues underneath — rot, improper hardware, and failed connections that aren't visible without a hands-on inspection. If your deck is over 10 years old or shows any bounce, movement, or sagging, get it inspected before it becomes a safety issue.
We offer free on-site inspections across Cedar Park, Austin, and surrounding areas. If there's a problem, we'll find it — and give you an honest assessment of what it takes to fix it.
